COMMENTARY

"A lagging tongue" -

Is a tongue that is outstretched, hanging down, in a perpendicular fashion in the mouth. This distinguishes it from the lolling tongue often found and described in dogs.

The 'lagging tongue' is a particularly human characteristic and is associated open eyed expectancy in the face.

"Tastes no food nor swallows fine wine" -

The tongue is not used for the purpose it was designed for namely to taste food and help in the act of swallowing, therefore its preoccupation in this position ('lagging') is of no avail, its function is useless.

So what is the purpose of this aphorism? 'Open-eyed - with excitement' - is to be avoided and the SOTI member should always seek equipoise - the 'balanced position.'
